Sunburn and Thunderstorms - BHR Newsletter

In your May newsletter you can find out how we went from sweltering heat to the kind of morning that makes you close your curtains and think again.

Week One

On Thursday we had a special one off publicity run with Run Birmingham. Well done to all of the Boathouse Runners who came along to show and talk about the benefits of running.

At Perry Hall parkrun it was a great run in the heat and sunshine. Many of you were running while some rested in anticipation of the Birmingham 10k.
In the early session we had a big group as the sunny weather encouraged people to get out and active straight away. I stayed around the lake and chatted with Lenorah and Tallulah, while the other runners chatted and ran in pairs, making a serene scene out of a sweaty, fitness activity! Tony was pushed hard by Zach in the other group.

Later on we had more run leaders than runners so I joined Roy, Tony and John for a very fast session over the hills and far away. Tonia maintained the serenity around the lake with Harbans, Balbir and Kam.

Week Two

We had four new runners, who all took the plunge straight into the intermediate group with Tony and Chan, and ran well all the way round with no regrets. I had a great run around the lake, chatting with Sukhbir, while Susan and Sam kept each other company just in front of us. A great run, finished of by the Boathouse in the sun, where we stretched.

Later on we had another big group of about 20 altogether, joined by 4 more new runners, took today up to around 40 runners with us out in the sunshine. What a Sunday morning! I stayed around the lake with Tonia as there was a sizeable group, taking on the challenge of our triangle hill sections wherever possible. Tony and Roy also had a big group on the other side of the park. We knew they had worked hard as when we came to stretch at the end, they were really feeling the heat as the heat from the sun started to peak. There was even talk of running vests to cool down in.

Week Three

I was a bit worried about the early session as I was the only Run Leader, but I shouldn't have as there was a very relaxed and flexible group of runners out in the sunshine looking after themselves and each other. This is really what Boathouse Runners is to me, and it sold the group well to our new runner Marie. It was great to see Maxine and Sally return for their second run with us. We finished with a stretch where I added ankle rotations to our usual routine, which I am finding invaluable at the moment and wanted to share. I must remember to keep them going so give me a nudge if I forget.

As the temperature rose, we were joined by Kirsty from British Triathlon, who told us about some upcoming beginners sessions. They have lots of beginners sessions from June at Handsworth Wellbeing Centre -  check on their website www.gotri.org/activities/id/8685/More and more runners approached as we got closer to 10am. I set off with Roy over the hills while Tonia took a numerous, happy and glamorous group around the lake. Among them were Reene, Kirby and Hannah, who were all returning and putting in the effort needed to get their legs moving again. We all were sweating profusely as we stopped to stretch and cool down.
Congratulations to Susan for taking on a 10k Race For Life challenge and raising more than her fundraising target along the way!

Week Four

Never mind the thunder...it was a great day for running!
We had a very small group for the 8.30 session as thunder and rain were threatening, but the five of us enjoyed the sun shine with a distant rumbling.
The second session saw a much bigger group. It's good to see our new runners bringing along more friends and family to join us for a lovely run. Roy brought the washing class back for Jyoti to do her washing. She received more of a history lesson than she bargained for, with names exchanged of powders: Percil, Daz, Omo and Drift. Roy has used them all!

Run Leader Column - The Newsletter

As you know from reading the Boathouse Runners newsletter, the look back over the month comes from me, unless I'm away when I need to get a report from someone else. In the case of this month, it was Tony who reported back in my absence. It used to be an overwhelming commitment, taking up an awful amount of my free time, so I have streamlined my process over the years. For anyone who has been with us for a while, you may have seen that this email went from weekly, to fortnightly, to monthly as it is now. All of which made it a more manageable task. I also now try to make a few notes on my phone on my way back from the park so that I can be home afterwards and get on with the rest of my day with my family. Before I had mastered this, I was guilty of not switching back to home life, and that's not healthy.
As much as I love compiling this for you, it is very much a diary from my experience of the Sunday morning runs. I have a few ideas on the go for how I can bring other voices from the Boathouse Runners into our monthly newsletter, but for now, I have an idea that can start straight away. If you have enjoyed your Sunday run, drop me a message (my number is at the end of the email, or you can send to peteyhworth10k@outlook.com) which only has to be a sentence, but more if you feel like it. I can then add it into the newsletter alongside the notes I have made. You may even be able to take some of the (time) weight off my shoulders.

    John hayes

I am Peter's brother and I help to organise the 10k run. I have ran for fitness in the past but have fell out of it very easily, never sustaining running for more than 12 months. However, helping out new runners has inspired me to get back out running and I have kept going since 2014.
